What Does Depression Really Feel Like?

Depression shows up differently for everyone. For some, it's a heavy exhaustion that makes lifting your head feel impossible. For others, it's a restless withdrawal, a wanting-to-disappear feeling. Some people describe it as being trapped under water, moving in slow motion while the world rushes past.

What's consistent is this: depression is our body's way of shutting down when it's been overwhelmed. It's not weakness. It's not laziness. It's a signal that something important needs attention. And that signal deserves to be heard.

Depression counselling offers a space where that signal is finally listened to—without judgement, without pressure to "snap out of it." In depression counselling, we work gently with what your body and mind are telling you, honouring the weight you're carrying while finding a path through it.

What Causes Depression Beyond Brain Chemistry?

Depression is often not just a chemical imbalance. It's connected to unprocessed grief, unmet needs, suppressed anger, attachment wounds, and the toll of living disconnected from yourself.

"If we do not praise whom we miss, we are ourselves in some way dead. So grief and praise make us alive." — Martin Prechtel

There's something in this that gets to the heart of why depression so often accompanies loss — not just recent loss, but old, unmourned losses that never had space to be felt. Grief that was swallowed or bypassed tends to settle in the body and the nervous system, becoming part of its resting state.

Somatic dimension of depression — body-based healing

The Somatic Dimension of Depression

Our body and mind are not separate. If you've experienced loss, betrayal, or accumulated stress without processing it, our nervous system holds that weight. Depression can be the body's way of saying: "I can't carry this alone anymore. I need help."

This is why purely cognitive approaches sometimes fall short. You can tell yourself positive things all day and still feel trapped. But when we work with our nervous system—our body, our breath, our felt sense—something shifts. Our body learns it's safe to feel again. Our nervous system can down-regulate from constant alert.

Depression in particular often reflects what is called a hypoarousal state — the nervous system going quiet and withdrawing rather than firing up. This low-energy, shut-down response can sometimes be traced back to very early years, when going flat and still was the only available response to an environment that felt too much or offered too little. Recognising this as a physiological pattern, rather than a personal failing or character flaw, can be the beginning of a genuinely different relationship with it.

A path back to feeling alive through depression counselling

Depression Counselling in Kyneton: A Path Back to Feeling Alive

I don't promise a quick fix, because depression doesn't work that way. But I do promise that you won't be alone with it anymore. We'll work slowly, gently, honouring how hard this is.

My integrative approach means we work with your whole self. We'll explore what your depression might be signalling. We'll help your nervous system find regulation and safety. We'll grieve what needs grieving. We'll reconnect you with parts of yourself that depression has hidden away.

As you begin to feel less alone, as someone truly witnesses your experience without trying to fix it, something changes. The heaviness begins to lift. Not all at once—in small moments at first. A moment where you notice something beautiful. A moment where you laugh without guilt. A moment where you feel your own aliveness again.

What Does a Depression Counselling Session Look Like?

A Gentle, Attuned Space

In our sessions together, there's no pressure to be okay. There's no demand that you 'think positive' or 'get over it.' Instead, you'll find a space where your depression is met with genuine curiosity and compassion.

We might explore what you're feeling in your body. We might trace the roots of your depression back to earlier experiences. We might work with visualisation or gentle movement. We might sit in silence together. The pace is yours.

I'll never push you faster than feels safe. If you need to reschedule because getting out of bed feels impossible, that's okay. If you need shorter sessions to start, that's okay. We build at your pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this different from seeing a psychologist?+

I'm a psychotherapist, not a clinical psychologist, so I don't diagnose or prescribe. What I offer is deep, relational therapy that works with your whole self—your body, your emotions, your life story. Many people find this integrative approach helps them understand the roots of their depression rather than just managing symptoms.

What if I can't explain why I'm depressed?+

You don't need to have it figured out. Often depression doesn't have a clear 'reason'—it's the body's way of shutting down in response to accumulated overwhelm, unprocessed grief, or unmet needs. Part of our work together is discovering what your depression is telling you. We'll explore gently and at your pace.

How long does depression therapy take?+

This depends on the depth and duration of your depression. Most people notice shifts within 8-12 sessions. Deeper healing typically takes 6 months to a year of consistent work. I'll be honest about what I'm seeing and help you set realistic expectations.

Can you prescribe medication?+

No, I can't prescribe medication. If medication would help support your therapy, I can refer you to a GP or psychiatrist. Many people combine therapy with medication, and both work beautifully together. This is entirely your choice.

What if I can barely motivate myself to come to sessions?+

Depression makes everything feel impossible, and showing up is genuinely hard. We can work with that. We might start with fortnightly sessions if that feels more manageable. We can have shorter sessions. We can explore what support you need to get here. Your motivation will come back as you start to feel less alone and more understood.

I can barely get out of bed — how am I supposed to come to therapy?+

I completely understand. Depression makes everything harder, including the things that might help. Online sessions are available from the comfort of your home — you don't even need to get dressed up. And you don't need to be functioning well to begin therapy. A good therapist understands that some days, just showing up is an enormous act of courage. Start with a free 15-minute discovery call from wherever you are. That's enough.

Where can I find depression counselling in the Macedon Ranges?+

I offer depression counselling in Kyneton, serving the wider Macedon Ranges including Woodend, Gisborne, Mount Macedon, Malmsbury, and surrounding areas. My practice is at 29 High Street, Kyneton, with free street parking. Online sessions are also available if getting out of the house feels too much right now — which is completely understandable with depression. The first step is just a 15-minute phone conversation.
