“The act of revealing oneself fully to another and still being accepted may be the major vehicle of therapeutic help.”

What is Interpersonal Group Psychotherapy? +

Interpersonal Group Therapy is the model created by Irvin Yalom, the world's most widely read living psychotherapist. Individuals gather in a small, consistent group to explore how they show up in relationship. Through interaction and feedback, members gain insight into their relational patterns, develop new ways of connecting, and discover they're not alone in how they struggle. The group is the instrument of change — not a classroom, not a support group.

What happens inside a session? +

We work with what's alive in the room — between members, in the silence, in the moment. There's no agenda, no topic for the week, except for what members bring. The focus is on the here-and-now: what you're feeling, what you're noticing in relation to others, what's hard to say. The leader supports the group to hold the collaborative conditions for honest sharing, allowing the group's 'work' to happen.

How long does it run? +

90 minutes weekly, 10-week terms. The first term is a beginning. Change can be immediate, although Interpersonal Psychotherapy Groups can become the highlight of people's week, and most people experience the deepest change over 12–24 months of consistent group work.

After the first term, the group decides together whether to continue. New members may possibly join at term boundaries.

Why do this in a group rather than one-to-one? +

Individual therapy helps you understand your patterns and potentially shift them with a trained therapist. An Interpersonal Group gives you a live relational space where patterns don't just get talked about, they show up, in real time, with multiple other people who are there for similar reasons. Shared vulnerability, witnessed over weeks and months, builds something that insight alone doesn't reach.

Practical Questions

Do I need to be in individual therapy at the same time? +

Recommended but not required. Group work can stir things up between sessions. If you don't have a therapist, I can help find one.

I'm nervous about sharing in front of strangers. +

Almost everyone is. No pressure to speak early on — but the work does require leaning into that discomfort eventually. That's what we're here to practise.

What if I miss a session? +

Attendance matters — the group depends on people showing up. If you need to miss one, let me know when you sign up. More than two absences makes meaningful work difficult, and we'd check in about timing.

Will I have to talk about my trauma? +

No. The group focuses on relational patterns, not narrating personal history. Disclosure is never required.

How do I know if I'm ready? +

The discovery call is designed to answer this. We talk through where you're at and whether the group fits.
