I'm Sebastian Kitchen, a psychotherapist working in central Bendigo. The way I work, therapy is a chance to slow down enough to actually notice what you're feeling, and then connect that to your thoughts, your body, and the patterns you keep finding yourself in. I work integratively and relationally: the body, the feelings, the relationships you're living inside, and the questions about what your life is for all get a seat, and I pay attention to what's happening in the room between us, not just the story you're telling about it.
My work is trauma-focused and attachment-focused. I'm trained in Level 1 of the Three Pillars of Integrative Attachment Therapy (Brown & Elliott) — a way of working with trauma held in the nervous system and in how we learned to attach, early on — and I draw on techniques from Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy alongside existential and relational approaches. Increasingly the way I work is shaped by Unconditional Self Therapy, a set of skills for becoming fluent in your own psychology. You don't find much of this kind of work up this way. I'm registered with PACFA as Mr Sebastian Kitchen, PACFA Reg. Certified Practising 32932, and work under supervision with Dr Tra-ill Dowie.
A relaxed conversation by phone or video — share what's bringing you here, ask any questions, and see whether the work feels like a fit. No obligation, no charge. Bendigo, Kyneton, or online.
A lot of the people I see have done therapy before. They've used their Medicare sessions, found CBT useful up to a point, and come away feeling like something underneath never quite got reached. If that's you, you're often who I work best with: the work that comes after the work, when you're ready to go deeper and give it some time.
Some things don't shift by talking about them. Trauma that lives in the body, anxiety that's in your chest before you've had a thought, the same relationship pattern coming round again — that work tends to happen lower down than the argument: in the body, in the feelings underneath, and in the relationship in the room, and it can't be rushed. Work like this is still hard to find in regional Victoria. That's the work I'm here for.
I live near Castlemaine and have a deep love for this country.

As a psychotherapist rather than a psychologist, I operate as a private-pay practitioner — Medicare rebates do not apply. Private health extras rebates aren't available for my sessions at present either. Many clients find private-pay works well, particularly those who have already used their annual Medicare psychology sessions and want to continue their work.
Psychologists in Bendigo typically work within Medicare-rebated frameworks — structured, short-term, CBT-focused. That can be genuinely helpful. But it's often not enough for people dealing with trauma that hasn't responded to standard approaches, complex relational patterns, or the kind of work that requires depth and time. My work is integrative, relational, and open-ended. We work with what's happening in your body, in your relationships and in the room — not just talking about your problems from a distance.
Yes. I see male clients of all ages and welcome this work — men in midlife, men navigating relationship breakdown, men carrying trauma or grief, men working with sexuality or identity. It's one of several areas I work in, alongside trauma, anxiety, depression, and integrative depth work more broadly.
Yes. I'm trained in Level 1 of the Three Pillars of Integrative Attachment Therapy (Brown & Elliott), a structured framework for working with the kind of trauma that lives in our attachment system — disorganised attachment, complex relational trauma, the patterns we developed early to survive. This pairs naturally with body-aware work, since attachment trauma is held in the nervous system as much as in our stories.
Yes. I have a particular interest in working with adults in later life — the existential transitions that come with ageing, end-of-life reflection, grief and loss, identity questions, and the longer arc of what a life has meant. Depth therapy at this stage of life is something I welcome and have time for.
Yes. The practice is in the centre of Bendigo, easily accessible from across the region — CBD, Eaglehawk, Big Hill, Lockwood, Marong — and from Castlemaine, Maldon, and Heathcote. For clients further afield, online sessions are available throughout Australia and internationally.
Psychologists typically hold a postgraduate degree in psychology and are registered with AHPRA. They often work with structured, evidence-based protocols like CBT. Psychotherapists train specifically in the therapeutic relationship itself, often with deeper training in modalities like somatic therapy, attachment work, and existential approaches. Both are qualified mental health professionals — the difference is often in approach and depth. I'm registered with PACFA, the peak body for psychotherapists and counsellors in Australia, as Mr Sebastian Kitchen, PACFA Reg. Certified Practising 32932.
